Experimental Evolution

Aim of the workshop

Evolution is a continuous process, spanning from the beginning of life until now. Its pace is usually slow, at least for the naked eye, but not necessarily so when we look at the appropriate organisms and use the convenient tools. Then evolution can be observed in real time, at such a fast pace that a few months, weeks, or even days are enough to appreciate differences between ancestors and descendants. This opens the opportunity for designing and performing experiments to test and explore the many avenues of evolution, the processes, mechanisms, conditionings, and limitations that converge on this wonderful process. This is experimental evolution and we are using different organisms and designs to answer some fundamental but also some applied questions in and with evolutionary biology.

This workshop is one of the activities related to the research project “Evolución y Salud:
Evolución Experimental y Resistencia a Antibióticos y Antivirales” awarded by the Conselleria d’Educació, Investigació, Cultura i Esport de la Generalitat Valenciana to the “Evolution and Health” Research Group of the Universitat de València. We have gathered some of the most relevant scientists in the field to discuss their latest results and to discuss our projects and the problems we are facing in the development of our research. We hope that everybody will benefit and enjoy these two days of scientific and personal interactions.

This workshop is sponsered by the project PROMETEO2016/122 of the Conselleria d’Educació, Investigació, Cultura i Esport de la Generalitat Valenciana.
